Somatics is an approach that understands that everything we have ever experienced has shaped and influences who we are being. Our experiences created a blueprint for our thoughts, beliefs, actions, and perception; or in other words, our paradigm — the lens through which we experience reality.

When we desire transformation, this is usually a sign that there are values “living” in our bodies that we do not actually agree with.

To create sustainable transformation — the values that are currently embodied need to be replaced by ones that we consent with, and this must be done by shifting not only our conscious thoughts, but the unconscious “knowing” of the body.

How Somatics Works

Let’s take the following scenario as an example.

You want to be more relaxed and trust the unknown
, but you were raised in a family, culture, and world that celebrates hustling and certainty — and these values shaped your current embodied reality. So, when you try to relax, you feel guilty, your mind becomes anxious, and soon you get up to do something because your body and mind signal to you that you haven’t “earned” the rest.

Somatics as a practice would support you in teaching your body how to rest by attuning to or connecting with the sensations of discomfort that arise when choosing to do something you have not been practicing (rest) — giving your nervous system a new experience.

Once your nervous system experiences a new — and better state, it can more confidently trust that resting is in fact a good and worthy practice, and you will be able to do so with more and more ease.

This is just one example of how our life experiences shape our realities and how somatics can support us in cultivating a new reality through the body.

Private Yin Yoga Class — CAD $50

Ah Yin— my favourite style of asana practice, which is why I teach it of course!

Yin Yoga is a very slow practice that is profoundly supportive for people wanting to heal their nervous systems as it supports the body in cultivating a sense of safety in stillness.

The postures are held for a longer duration of time and specifically target the biggest and most encapsulating connective tissue we have in our bodies — fascia. By holding the postures for over a minute, this connective tissue releases, offering the possibility of emotional release and an overall reset for the body.

I highly recommend these classes for those who want to reduce anxiety, ease chronic tension and cultivate the ability to relax within oneself.

Wild Cycle: A Self-Paced Course To Heal PMS & PMDD

After years of struggling with my own PMDD symptoms I have a completely different perspective on this diagnosis. Whereas I spent years thinking there was something fundamentally wrong with me, now I know that these symptoms were the result of a combination of three things: 

1. Being disconnected from and living out of sync with my menstrual cycle. 

2. Living as a woman in patriarchy, which inherently conditions women to feel less than and to source power and permission from outside of ourselves (cue self-abandonment and insecurity). 

3. Existing in a traumatized body — both from this life and from the unhealed pain of those that came before me. 

It is from this perspective that I am creating this experience — for you to start the process of restoring and cultivating a sacred connection within your own being, because trust me, there is nothing wrong with you, you just need different information, a new perspective and a few profoundly transformational practices.
